My First Blog!

Monday 12th October, 2009

Hi and welcome to my first blog. It's pretty exciting to finally have my new website up and running. I'm extra happy to now have an online store, so those hard to find ingredients are now only a 'click' away. If there are any products you'd like to see included in the store, please let me know. I'll be adding different items from time to time, things like meditation CD's, DVD's of old TV series I've done, books, a fabulous apron and different food items.

It seems that lots of people want to know more about alternative foods. Things like gluten free grains, sea weeds, ancient cereals, lesser used fruits and veggies, 'super foods', miso paste and other Japanese ingredients to name but a few. So I'll do my best to take the fear out of using obscure and foreign ingredients in this blog.

It's important to know what foods to include once you start to avoid bread, pasta, white rice, milk, cheese and meat, so I'll give you alternative sources of iron, protein, calcium, zinc and other important nutrients . If you go to the Recipes page you'll find a good election of my recipes that will get you started, but from time to time I'll add more here.

I'll also talk about the health of the body and mind. In my clinic I seem to get waves of patients presenting with the same symptoms. It usually has to do with the season so I'll talk about this and how to treat common (and not so common) ailments using food, herbs, lifestyle tips and covering the associated emotional component.

And keep you up to date on what's going on with me.

Gary Mehigan (MasterChef) and I filmed the second series of Good Chef Bad Chef  throughout August. (Yes, he is the busiest man on the planet.) It starts Monday, October 12th on Lifestyle Food at 6:30pm. It's a daily show. Gary and I have fun making this series so hopefully you'll be inspired to experiment with some of the ingredients I use and try some of Gary's healthier recipes. (See the TV/DVD pages for more.) The first series has done well in Europe and the Middle East so they are keen for the second series, which is pretty exciting. I hope you enjoy the show and learn heaps about gluten free, sugar free, dairy and meat free cooking and ingredients. And of course be marveled by Gary's chopping skills and very indulgent recipes.

I will enter a new blog at least weekly. I've got lots of ideas but I'm happy to receive suggestions of course.

In Good Health,

Janella

Btw, that kinda strange looking seafood above is a shellfish called NAVAJA. It's popular in Spain and tastes a bit like a mix of scallops and mussels. Very yummy indeed

Gary hasn't got that many bad food habits. He uses fresh, quality ingredients. If he toned down on the sugar and carbohydrates he would soon get rid of the gut.

Thanks for the nice comments on the show. Sue, Gary loves ALL food, and lots of it. It's not what he eats especially, but the quantity and when.

Its hard to use willpower to control portions. When the body is in balance it gets the correct signals about hunger and fullness. So you don't have to stop yourself eating copious amounts of foods you just automatically eat as much as you need to and stop when full.

Hi Janella - it's nice to find a fresh new cooking show to watch after all the old re-runs I've been watching. Your recipes are very healthy and I'm looking forward to trying some. Are you able to provide me with your recipe for baked sweet ricotta with mango as I couldn't see it on the lifestyle food good chef/bad chef site? Thanks.

Hi Janella, from the first time I saw your cooking methods and the knowledge you have to share on GCBC, I was hooked. I just wish you were based in Perth, or visited here regularly, as I think you'd be the perfect teacher. I've had a lifetime of health problems, so im trying to absorb all the info you can give on alternative eating (or is it just normal eating? lol). Would you recommend a brilliant naturopath in Perth, or do you come here at all?

Hi Janeela, have just been diagnosed with diabeties and am a struggling with the changes. I am another Gary, too much food and too much refined sugar etc. I have changed to spelt flour and a low GI sugar but was wandering what the best sugar alternative is, won't use any of the artificial sweeteners, but need something for baking and any other sugar needs. I don't eat sea food and very little red meat but do eat chicken, I am so confused about whats good and whats bad now. I am not sure what to do. You are so inspiring but some of the products in your online shop just scare the herll out of me, can you help? thank you.
